Exeter bands third album released on a German label, possibly due to the lack of a local audience that appreciates top-notch guitar pop. This is the album the Beach Boys would have made, if they had listened to British underground bands such as Television Personalities or Razorcuts. The set opens with Summer Blonde, which is also released as a 7 single. It should be all over the radio, on your car stereo and tattooed on your brain. But with a lack of money, PR and advertising, thats very unlikely. The bands singer and guitarist, Matthew Stead is an exceptionally passionate writer, and its evident that he also has a very hip record collection. The album is recorded by local studio genius and multi-instrumentalist, Andy Fonda, who also marks the album with his own distinct drumming skills. A Fine Day For Sailing should be playing packed shows and festivals, and we should have their names rammed down our throats. This is the sound the South West should be known for, instead of tiresome blues guitarists, soul-less metal merchants and middleclass-friendly jazz bores. Rising from the ashes of C86 band The Groove Farm, Beatnik Filmstars took a much spikier approach to their music. Wedding the angular punk of early Fall to the experimentalism of Pavement and Truman\'s Water, the Filmstars developed a sizable body of recordings over the course of the 90s that suggests an interest in both classic northern English bloody-mindedness and Yank-style indie rock. Coming on at times like the Wedding Present jamming with the Swell Maps, they weren\'t afraid to throw some pop music in there too.
After two excellent albums and a handful of singles for the UK label La-Di-Da, the Filmstars graced Slumberland with Beezer, a compilation of demos, single tracks and unreleased gems that neatly summarized their career up through 1996. It\'s a spiky, challenging mix of megaphone vocals, sudden sonic shifts, grinding guitars, flailing rhythms and occasionally a sing-along chorus somehow fighting through the dense mix. Far from your run-of-the-mill indie rock, this is bold and distinctive next-level stuff that grabs you by the scruff and shakes off any preconceptions you might have about indie.

Featuring Black Tambourine/Whorl alumnus Mike Schulman, Manatee were a relatively short-lived project who, on this evidence of this fine single, flamed-out far too quickly. Inspired by bands as diverse as Velvet Underground, The Ramones, The Feelies and The Replacements, Manatee created a straight-ahead brand of power-pop that’s as impassioned as it is timeless.
“Indecision” is an uptempo tune driven by a naggingly catchy guitar riff and Keith’s ace vocals. Hearkening back to the 80s heyday of Game Theory, The Replacements and The Smithereens, “Indecision” is an effortlessly rocking pop gem that demonstrates the enduring strength of the basic guitar/bass/drums format when combined with great tunes and a passionate delivery.
“Fifteen Minute Drive” is a moodier affair, a minimal strum ‘n’ drum that snaps along nicely until it reaches a squalling stun-guitar coda, what was once a subliminal bed of noise becoming a torrent of squeal and feedback. Says Kip: “The song’s about rejecting hyper-serious adolescent romance that imprisons you and inhibits your ability to become the person you want to be and do the things you want to do. It\'s about a girl telling an emo boy to go grow a pair.”
On the B-side is another new track, Lost Saint, which is “about growing up, going to Catholic School and insubordination.”

Twig was one of the many bands who showed up during the early 00s in Stockholm – a very creative era for the Swedish indiepop music scene – put out a few CDR releases, and then fell silent for a few years… That is why, when American indiepop label Cloudberry released their double A-side ”Ciao Ciao Bomb / Wentworth” as the first vinyl single on the label, we were both surprised and excited, as we had presumed that they had quit playing together. This was of no importance however, as one of the best Swedish bands around had suddenly re-emerged – no doubt influenced by British 80s pop and inumerable hours spent at libraries in the Swedish capital. Singer Henrik Linden’s Edwyn Collins-like voice combined with Mathias Nilsson’s chiming, jangly guitars (just the way they sounded during the heydays of Felt) completely blew our minds! Later followed a brilliant debut album, “Life After Ridge”, on Peruvian label Plastilina, celebrated gigs… and yet another long wait for new releases from this magnificent three-piece. So, it is with great pride We present a new double A-side single with the band. On ”Hourglass / Scattered Dreams” we meet the very same Twig that we know from their earlier releases, only with a more refined sound. Ville Hopponen from Finnish pop elegants Cats On Fire makes a guest appearance behind the drums which, on “Hourglass”, adds new dynamics and energy to the rhythm section on this Twig hit, where they succeed in sounding both explosive and moderate at the same time. On the flip side we find ”Scattered Dreams”, a more melancohlic tune, where Kalle Berglund sets the mood by joining the band on saxophone. All neatly wrapped up in the characteristic fable sleeve design by Joakim Bengtsson this ressembles nothing else today. The parts may be familiar, but the whole, with Henrik Lindens sharp lyrics, turns into something of their own. Something we dare say is unique today. Included is a code that allows you to download the songs in mp3 format. Tracklist: ”Hourglass” and ”Scattered Dreams”.

What can we say about these classic songs? Velocity Girl were one of the founding Slumberland bands, and it\'s safe to say that the US indie-pop scene would hardly exist without the immense influence exerted by the Forgotten Favorite 7\' single. That single and their subsequent releases on Sub Pop truly set the tone for the gradual shift towards pop that marked US indie music throughout the 90\'s.
The tracks from the I Don\'t Care If You Go single are also of great interest. They feature the original Velocity Girl line-up, which sported Bridget Cross (later of Unrest fame) on bass and vocals, plus college friends Berny and John on bass and drums. It\'s super stuff, and easily recognizable as laying the groundwork for the classic tunes that followed.

Gregory Webster has recorded for some pretty impressive scene setting labels over the past 25 years. The list includes seminal UK indie labels Creation, Sarah Records and The Subway Organisation, plus indiepop bastions from Australia to the USA. Now Slumberland Records is pleased to join in the fun. Gregory first emerged during the mid-80s UK C86 scene with Razorcuts, who hit on a sound somewhere between the 12-string heavy folk-rock sound of mid-60s LA and the unique pop sensibilities of UK post-punk. The Carousel soon followed, a gorgeously out-of-time Psyche-Folk duo formed with Talulah Gosh founder member Elizabeth Price. After the acoustic simplicity of his first solo LP My Wicked Wicked Ways in 1995, Gregory put together perhaps his most prolific (and noisy) outfit, Sportique, with ex-TV Personality Mark Flunder and Heavenly\'s Amelia Fletcher & Rob Pursey. Gregory\'s debut Slumberland single is his first solo recording for almost 15 years.
